Event Description
You are warmly invited to join the Galiano Ensemble of Victoria for the opening concert of their 16th season! In this tribute to Europe’s Nordic countries, the Galiano Ensemble is presenting an assortment of delightful pieces from four Scandinavian composers.
Johan Svendsen was a gifted Norwegian violinist and composer who became the greatest Scandinavian conductor of his time. Although his music reflects his love for the German Romantic style, his Two Swedish Folk Melodies Op. 27 shows that he remained passionate about the traditional music of his homeland.
Asger Hamerik was a renowned Danish conductor, pianist and teacher known as a leading advocate for Scandinavian Romanticism. His Symphony No. 6, Op. 38 (Spirituelle) was considered to be both his simplest and most popular composition.
Edvard Grieg, Norway’s most famous composer, was actually raised in an area that was a Danish province at the time. He was attracted to a movement that recognized nationalistic feelings for Norway and eventually became a pre-eminent voice in the Norwegian idiom. Two Melodies, Op. 53 shows that his music continued to demonstrate the folk tradition of his homeland.
Niels Wilhelm Gade, a conductor, violinist, organist and composer, is considered by some to have been the most important figure in Danish music in the 19th Century.
Novellettes, in F Major, Op 53 was written in his later years but the German Romantic influence from his time spent with Mendelssohn in Leipzig is evident in this work.
Conductor Yariv Aloni and the orchestra promise an entertaining evening of wonderful chamber music so be sure to put this in your calendar!
