Event Description
Greater Victoria lovers of film and of music have an opportunity this weekend to take in the best of both – a preview of a musically-important documentary just named as a winner at the Hollywood Independent Film Festival and Awards.
“Beyond the Fear of Singing: Unlock Your Voice, Release Your Song” is the latest in a series of documentaries by singer-songwriter Michael Stillwater who will be in Victoria for the viewing.
The film focuses on the global phenomenon of people who don't believe they have a voice worthy to sing – an idea that Stillwater vehemently disputes. It was filmed in Australia, India, Europe and America over a nine year span.
Alan Cohen, the author of The Dragon Doesn’t Live Here Any More, describes the film as “a penetrating and healing journey into the part of all of us that wants to sing.”
The film will be screened at the Victoria Church of Truth, 111 Superior Street, on Saturday evening, beginning at 7 p.m. And yes, Stillwater promises there will be many opportunities to sing and chant during the evening.
The film screening will be the culmination of a weekend of events featuring Stillwater, all held at the same location.
On Friday evening at 7 p.m. Stillwater will lead a ChantWave session, and all day Saturday, beginning at 10 a.m. there will be a Song Sanctuary seminar in which each participant will be led to find their own “heart song.”
